Cellular Router or Modem: A Basic Guide to IoT Hardware

Today, internet access is increasingly crucial to the way we function at home and at work. Most of us use the internet nearly every moment of our waking day. However, we may not fully understand the cellular technologies behind the scenes.

Consider the cellular router and modem. What are they, and how do they work? Do at-home modems and routers work the same way as an IoT router or modem? 

In this article, we’ll explore how traditional cellular and IoT hardware works, and what owners and operators need to experience a smooth IoT deployment.

First, some basic definitions.

What is a cellular modem?

The traditional modem is a standalone, easy-to-set up device that only needs an Ethernet connection. Whether it’s by DSL, cable, or even dial-up, a modem generally offers homeowners and some small businesses a simple path to internet access.

Modems are essential for basic internet connectivity but lack the networking capabilities of routers. 

What is a cellular router?

By contrast, a cellular router creates a local area network, or LAN. The router works in tandem with a modem to connect to multiple devices — whether they are multiple computers or multiple pieces of IoT equipment, such as a fleet of EV chargers or a portfolio of digital signs.

Wired routers

Homes (and many businesses) generally use wired routers that connect to an external modem via Ethernet cabling. This type of router also allows for additional cables that link multiple devices together.

Wireless routers

Despite its name, a wireless router isn’t completely wireless; it connects to a modem by Ethernet, but uses Wi-Fi to broadcast radio wave signals to other devices via antennas.  Wireless cellular routers are generally easy and convenient to set up.

Whether wired or wireless, a cellular router offers several security advantages over a modem:

  • Firewall – A cellular router can act as a firewall to protect against common outside threats.
  • Network Protection – A router can hide IP address(es) from public view for greater network security.
  • VPN – For added security, a router can connect equipment to a virtual private network (VPN).
  • Restricted access – Routers also make it3 easy to restrict access to certain devices.

What is a cellular IoT modem?

What is a cellular IoT router?

A cellular IoT router is both a LAN device (managing local connections between IoT devices) and a wide-area WAN device (providing internet connectivity through a cellular network). An IoT router is designed to be reliable and secure, making it ideal for industrial, agricultural, and other IoT applications.

As mentioned earlier, most IoT routers contain an embedded modem to help ensure connectivity in remote areas where wired internet or Wi-Fi is unavailable. 

Unlike most traditional routers, IoT routers:

Choosing the right IoT router

Any enterprise trying to plan for an IoT deployment needs the right router before anything can move forward. For value-added resellers (VARS) that need a scalable cellular solution for their chosen IoT application — whether that’s a fleet of EV chargers or a portfolio of smart vending machines — procuring the right IoT router is likewise critical. 

For example, someone designing a project that will bring Wi-Fi to high-speed trains will definitely need a strong mobile connectivity solution. An RV manufacturer installing a cellular solution needs an ultra-reliable 5G solution — probably with 4G failback capability for areas where 5G is unavailable. A retail outlet may be fine with fixed connectivity, but a pop-up retail kiosk may not be.

  1. Is fixed wireless or mobile wireless best for my IoT application?
  2. How many devices/machines can I connect to one IoT router?
  3. What type of antenna goes with my preferred router?
  4. Can you tell me more about your dual-SIM routers?
  5. Do you provide an eSIM solution?
  6. Do you provide carrier connectivity for the routers you sell, or do I have to set up a data plan myself?
  7. What accessories are included with the router?
  8. Do I need to manage the IoT routers myself, or does someone else do that?
  9. Does the router come with a software platform for remote monitoring and management?
  10. What kind of support is included in the event of problems with the router?

These are just a few examples of questions you should ask a managed wireless services expert. With detailed answers, you will have a better idea of the router (and data plan, and managed services) you may need for your IoT project.
