10 Things Every Security Reseller Can Do for Better Connectivity

  • June 20, 2024

Today’s value-added resellers (VARs) play an important role in technology fulfillment. VARs typically purchase products below retail price, customize those products, and resell to customers at a premium. The ‘added value’ resell generally comes from services related to the product, such as installation, onboarding, and support.

Here’s what the above process might look like for a security reseller:

Imagine you are a VAR and/or system integrator of security equipment. A customer needs 30 security cameras installed at a large warehouse. As the reseller, you plan to bundle the surveillance cameras with cellular IoT hardware, accessories, connectivity, and monitoring services.

Where do you start?

Because you know how much surveillance cameras depend on uninterrupted service, you choose network connectivity as your top priority. Avoiding weak signals and slow data speeds is key. Your client doesn’t have time to monitor their IoT devices, so you’ll be doing that for them. To avoid deployment delays, you also need a solution that gets you to market quickly.

If you are a security reseller, you’re probably aware of these potential pitfalls. As you navigate them, here are 10 ways to get better cellular connectivity for your security solution – and boost sales margins while you’re at it.

1. Know Customers' Bandwidth and Data Needs

Fact: Most security equipment consumes a lot of data. It’s entirely possible that a continually running, high-res camera will use ~500 GB each month. Although video compression, cloud storage, and motion sensors can help reduce the load, the right connectivity solution also matters.

Given the needs of most security equipment, it makes sense to choose a data plan that balances cost and data usage. But the total cost of ownership (TCO) depends on multiple factors – including number of devices, power requirements, monitoring services, maintenance, and so on.

These are just a few considerations when bundling security equipment with connectivity.

2. Consider Onsite Power Requirements

Sophisticated security equipment, including cameras, access control, and mobile security trailers, can consume significant amounts of power. To prepare, you’ll need to ask some basic questions: What infrastructure is needed? How reliable is the power supply, especially in remote locations? What backups are in place?

While planning your project, remember to account for battery life. It may seem like a smaller detail, but it’s important — particularly for mobile or temporary installations.

For customers who don’t want to change batteries or rely on solar power, perhaps a wired camera makes more sense. Just keep all these details in mind when you investigate your connectivity options.

3. Research Hardware and Connectivity Options

Before you can promote a strong solution, you need to know all your implementation efforts will bear fruit. For connectivity, this means choosing IoT hardware, data plans, and services that make yours the only viable option for customers.

If you already work with a reliable hardware vendor, great. If not, you’ll probably source cellular IoT hardware via an original equipment manufacturer (OEM), a licensed distributor, or a combination of the two.

Keep in mind that OEMs usually sell connectivity hardware and accessories separately, so you’ll need to know your exact needs before ordering. If you are comparison shopping, buying from a distributor may make more sense. Here at OptConnect, we are a Tier 1 distributor of all major hardware brands, including external and embedded solutions. No matter the need, our solution engineers can source the right hardware and create a solution around it.

Generally, you should factor into your costs:

  • Cellular IoT hardware/devices and accessories
  • Data plans, upgrades, maintenance, and so on
  • Access to management services and monitoring platforms

4. Follow Regulatory and Compliance Rules

While researching hardware options, remember to check on compliance requirements for cellular connectivity, which can vary widely by region and country. In general, regulations are more complicated for global coverage than they are for local coverage. Some vendors (like OptConnect) can walk you through regulatory issues during the design phase of your project.

Considering embedded cellular? Be forewarned: the certification process can be complex and time consuming. View our embedded solutions page for greater guidance.

5. Ensure Robust Network Security

Security installations are sensitive by nature. Luckily, most hardware is designed to protect data transmitted over cellular networks. At minimum, you should have secure, private networks that only you or your customer can access. Remote security updates and regular diagnostics can also ensure your device is always up to date. At OptConnect, we monitor networks and hardware 24/7 for extra protection.

Ask your vendor to walk you through the security features of each hardware brand so you can compare before you buy. Some cellular devices also feature built-in sensors that can alert customers to tampering attempts.

6. Simplify Setup and Configuration

To help ensure an easier configuration and setup process, your vendor may send a test unit to ensure reliable coverage even in remote or challenging environments. At OptConnect, we work with customers’ configuration requirements ahead of time so that each device is configured, provisioned, and ready to go immediately – right out of the box.

If you want to configure and provision the devices yourself, your vendor should offer a step-by-step process that helps avoid confusion or unnecessary delays.

7. Ask about Redundancy and Failover Options

A consistent network is critical for security applications where downtime can be costly or dangerous. Even if you decide on a wired solution, you should still have a backup.

While single-SIM routers are less expensive, multiple-SIM and/or Wi-Fi routers can offer added protection during a network outage. Automatic failover to cellular can also protect your equipment if the Ethernet connection goes down. Your connectivity expert can advise you on other options, including the pros and cons of eSIM technology.

8. Consider Fully Managed Connectivity

Not every reseller is a technology expert. Most don’t have the expertise (or time) to manage every aspect of connectivity on their own. That’s why hands-on help (all the way from project design through deployment and management) may make sense.

What does a fully managed connectivity plan look like?

At OptConnect, it starts with quick order fulfillment and supply chain management. All our OptConnect cellular devices are fully configured and provisioned (as mentioned earlier). Customers get lifetime access to the Summit portal, where they can manage their entire IoT portfolio in one place. The Customer Care team monitors each device in real time, sending alerts if network problems occur.

If a device goes down, autonomous repair actions attempt reconnection – reducing the need for a costly truck roll. Customers can monitor data usage in Summit and avoid expensive overages. A secure IP network gives enhanced peace of mind. API integration helps streamline workflows. Learn more

9. Learn about Billing and Hardware Warranties

Depending on the project, resellers may have to juggle monthly bills from multiple vendors or carriers. To alleviate that burden, consider the benefit of all-in-one billing for hardware, data plan, and added services – which can also benefit your end customer.

At OptConnect, customers on an OpEx pricing model receive lifetime warranty coverage on their fully managed hardware, with free overnight replacement. Not every vendor offers this benefit.

10. Check Availability of Live Tech Support

OptConnect's award winning technical support takes care of all your needs.

Finally, consider tech support. Will you need to submit a ticket if hardware issues arise? What is the typical turnaround time if you submit a ticket? Will you or your customers depend on email support only?

Even the best products are not immune from glitches. The most reliable networks sometimes go down. To keep customers happy, look for reliable troubleshooting options that help you resolve issues quickly. At OptConnect, our award-winning team is available 24 x 7 x 365, for quick resolution day or night.
