Why a Bitcoin ATM Needs Fast, Reliable, Secure Internet Connectivity

Since its beginnings in 2009, Bitcoin has become a household name, along with the concept of cryptocurrency in today’s world. Given crypto’s growing popularity, that world has expanded to include crypto kiosks and Bitcoin ATMs, including Bitcoin Depot, RockItCoin, Coin Cloud, Bitnovo, CoinFlip, and dozens of others besides Bitcoin.

According to the 2024 Global Market Report by Business Research, the reach of crypto ATMs is growing exponentially. Forecasts suggest that market size will grow to $1.71 billion by 2028 alongside widespread adoption, new markets, investments, and regulatory support. But crypto ATMs also face intense scrutiny and security risks.

Though not all crypto ATM security issues can be solved by technology, today’s innovators are making great strides forward. Basic Functionality

A traditional ATM communicates with a bank system — allowing patrons to make a deposit, inquire about account balances, withdraw cash, and complete additional financial transactions.

Network Type

Traditional ATMs may use Ethernet for a primary connection and a cellular router for added redundancy and backup if the primary connection fails.

4G connectivity for a traditional ATM will be compliant with all PCI DSS banking regulations.

Typically, wireless 4G LTE Cat 1 routers are designed for indoor or other controlled environments like bank lobbies or retail kiosks. Depending on features and added services, the cost range is $100 – $600. 

Prices for 4G LTE Cat 4 or 5G routers are naturally higher than Cat 1 options, due to industrial grade materials, higher speeds, and additional security features. Average costs begin at $200 depending on brand and features.

Essentially, a traditional ATM may connect via Ethernet or wirelessly, or a combination of both for added redundancy. Data transfer needs are generally low. A Bitcoin ATM, on the other hand, has moderate to high data needs, and benefits from a 4G LTE Cat 4 or higher solution, especially for a multi-location deployment. Connectivity solutions for Bitcoin ATMs also rely on added security features to better protect both the ATM owner/operator and consumer.

In most M2M applications, speed matters. But speedy connectivity is especially important for crypto ATMs. 

Like most consumers, crypto users expect secure and near-instantaneous transactions when they visit an ATM. Unlike traditional ATMs, cryptocurrency ATMs must communicate with a distributed network and validate transactions in real time.
